Your Self Care Action Plan

Self-Care is important for everyone. Self-Care in many ways must be tailored to the individual and if you need help, do not hesitate to contact your health care professionals to assist you in developing your plan. Physiotherapists are passionate about healthcare.

Physiotherapy is treatment to restore, maintain and make the most of a person’s mobility, function and well-being. Physiotherapy helps through physical rehabilitation, injury prevention, education and health and fitness. Physiotherapists can play an integral role in your Self-Care Action Plan.

Here are some suggestions to start you on your Self-Care Action Plan.

Get Active and Stay Active

Regular exercise can increase your self-confidence, improve your mood, decrease symptoms of mild depression and anxiety and help you relax.

Exercise can also improve the quality of your rest and sleep which is often disrupted by stress, anxiety and depression. The type and intensity of the exercise that is best suited for you is important for you to determine.

Whether it is performing stretches, aerobic, anaerobic, weight bearing or non-weightbearing activities will depend on a variety of factors. The benefits of performing regular, safe exercise will allow your joints to stay lubricated and decrease the risk of experiencing some chronic diseases later on in life.

20-minutes of exercise a day, can improve your personal relationships, mental health, physical well-being, improve sleep and allow you to have the physical fitness and mobility to participate in hobbies that interest you.

Get Enough Sleep and Rest

Taking the time to rest and recharge daily, even for a few minutes actually results in you being more productive.

Ensuring that you are getting proper sleep and rest also results in improving your physical and mental health because resting results in a decrease in stress hormones like adrenaline and cortisol.

Mental Health Activities

Identifying your needs will help you determine what Mental Health Activities are most important for you to address.

Mental Health Activities include Meditation, Deep Breathing Exercises and ‘Unplugging’.

Meditation has been shown to improve your focus and concentration, lower your levels of stress, lower and anxiety and also improve your self-awareness and self-esteem.

‘Unplugging’ by taking time away from your phone, computer and TV can improve your overall well being. Research has proven that limiting your time online can improve your sleep, allow you to be more productive and improve your relationships with those around you.
