For right-sizers, downsizers, and those looking for a more relaxed and affordable lifestyle away from the big city bustle, Hamilton’s escarpment country may hold the answer.

“Those looking for an active lifestyle, far from the noise of the big cities, [are] captivated by life in Hamilton’s escarpment country. There is literally something for everyone, regardless of age or ability,” said Sheri Robins, broker with ReMax Escarpment. “And, with its affordability in terms of cost of living and real estate, there is much more to be gained.”

Here are five reasons people are choosing to make the move to the Hamilton escarpment:

Affordability. Real-estate affordability and large lot sizes, compared to bigger cities, make a Hamilton lifestyle enticing. Its proximity to Toronto and relatively low commercial rents have attracted a growing roster of professionals to the area, including lawyers, doctors, dentists and more. Data from Zolo.ca reveals that as of November 2020, the average price of a home in Toronto was $1-million compared to an average of $678,000 in Hamilton. That delivers an average of $322,000 to your pocket — without taking into account the additional savings gained from downsizing.

Activity and style. Eating establishments, from the old-fashioned diner to fine dining, have grown in number across the city of Hamilton with top chefs at the helm. They are also receiving national attention, according to Urbancity.com. Fashion and style span Main Street from boutique to haute couture. An active music and theatre scene, botanical gardens, art galleries and museums, castles, conservation parks and outdoor winter sporting venues engage mind, body and soul year-round.

Open spaces. With green space all around, escarpment living brings with it the tranquility of rural life. It is safe, quiet, and relaxing while offering easy access to the amenities one expects from a large city. Locally dubbed ‘The Mountain,’ the area boasts more than 100 waterfalls tucked among the escarpment’s verdant trails. The St. Elizabeth Village community also offers walking trails, gazebos, boardwalks and covered bridges just steps away.

World-class healthcare. Hamilton is home to some of the province’s leading healthcare, specialist, and research facilities. These include the renowned Juravinski Cancer Centre and McMaster University Medical Centre, with its broad range of adult specialty clinics and nationally recognized digestive diseases care and research programs. St. Joseph’s Healthcare is well-known for its respiratory, kidney, and mental health care.
